In 1981, quirky teen Guinevere is trying to rebrand. New year, new her. Less weird, more cheer. But life stays messy. As she faces rejections, befriends misfits, and clashes with her eccentric parents, she finds hard-fought self-acceptance through friendship, faith, and pom-poms.

Guinevere is sick to death of being weird. She wants to be nice. She wants to be normal. She wants the aptly named Matt Madewell to ask her to the dance. After reinventions and misadventures, she’s on the cusp of being accepted by the girls whose names in in Y. But what does she gain if she earns a seat at the hallowed cafeteria table of normalcy but leaves her old friends—and herself—behind?
